1969 miller big 40. 11-11-2015, 10:24 PM. I bought an older big 40 to restore and have been looking for wiring schematics. I looked on the miller website but I guess it's to old to look up. Im specifically trying to see how the bridge rectifiers are wired up. I have all four brushes connected but the other terminals is where I get lost.

Oct 17, 2013. #1. We have a 1979 Miller Big 40 that has some issues. In order to get it to weld properly, we need to have the amperage control maxed out, and even then the beads are too cold. I noticed while the welder is being used, one of the big resisters at the back of the machine is glowing red; right up to the adjustment collar.

Mstoner Don"t know how you made out so I'll throw in my 2 cents. big 40s are good welders. sounds like a brush problem to me. It could be one of the diodes of which there are 4. The brushes are used to excite the "Alternator". There is also a small black "box" 2x2x1/2" located some place on the right side under the fuel tank or on the rear plate.
If you saw in my other thread, I bought a Big 40 yesterday. I know the carb needs work because fuel flows out the inlet when the valve is opened. I looked through owners manual and only saw reference to Marvel-Schlebler carb. I looked at the machine this morning to hopefully get a model code and I see the carb says Bendix. Best I can tell they bought Zenith.

Disconnect them all first to avoid a false reading. Once you get the engine going, take good low ohms readings on each glow plug.

07-09-2008, 09:11 PM. miller big 40. Back from short trip. Checked continuity from slip rings back to rectifier. All checked out at less than 1 ohm. Additional history is unit was working, was towed a few miles and engine would not start. Fuse at hold in to start was blown. Fuse was replaced but welder has no output.
02-05-2007, 10:00 PM. In a way I think you're comparing apples to oranges. When it comes to engine drives I'm not a big fan of Miller, and yes I've run a million of them and owned one for years. Far as SMAW that SA200 will run circles around the Big 40. But as said the average "general" weldor will not know the difference or even care.
